So how are your New Year’s resolutions going? Now that the holidays are over, everybody is busy getting things back to normal – and making resolutions stick. If you’re anything like me, you’re always looking for ways to keep yourself motivated. This year my goal is to be more focused and be more zen, so to speak. One way to achieve that is to stay in shape!
It’s a fact that not a lot of people exercise in winter. The holiday season is to blame more often than not. With December well behind us, it’s mostly the cold weather that’s keeping us in our homes. I don’t really work out in the gym, but I have friends who do and they skip the gym all the same. That said, it is completely safe to work out in winter, and it is even safer to exercise outdoors, I might add.
Did you know that you burn much more calories during an outdoor winter workout? That’s right. Owing to the cool ambient temperature, your body has to use extra calories when you take your workout in the great outdoors. I know it’s not going to be easy at first, but, believe it or not, your body is actually going to build up tolerance against the wintry elements. Granted it’s going to be painful the moment you step outside, you will beat the elements over time.
So if you’re looking into losing weight fast after the food-centered holidays, you should get your workout groove on right outside your door, right? Not so fast! Outdoor winter workout is literally not for the faint of heart. Cold weather and cardiovascular diseases simply do not go well together, so people who have heart conditions shouldn’t be exercising without supervision.
If you’re ready to lose that pesky holiday weight you gained last month, be sure to gear up properly for winter first and foremost. Dress in layers to stay warm and safe outside. However, you need to put on the right base layers to keep your body dry. You will end up with damp and wet clothes if you wear non-breathable fabric. You don’t want that, so choose wool or synthetic moisture-wicking materials instead.
